Since I have so much invested in Nikon equipment (D300, D90, D80, SB-900, 85mm portrait lens, 28-80 zoom lens, 70-300 zoom lens, 15-55 zoom lens, etc.), this was the natural choice. The "works" of the item are in a small box (less than 1 inch cube) which is composed of two parts that are brought together with a seam. The SB-900 is a heavy unit, and within a short time of putting the flash on the mount, the little box separated and broke. I thought the first one was a fluke, but I bought another, brand new one from B&H. It did the same thing. Since I was in the middle of shooting senior portraits, I used superglue to hold it together temporarily. I then sent it to Nikon, but since I didn't have the receipt, they told me it would cost $75 to repair. I bought an off-brand for $25, which turns out to be better made. I've now used it for a year with no problem. Meanwhile, I've bought a new Canon camera and have been selling off my Nikon lenses on eBay. I think Nikon has been resting on its laurels for too long. The name is no longer enough to hold me.
Description of SC-29 Ttl Coiled Remote Cord
The SC-29 is an off-camera flash cord that provides full TTL control for Nikon Speedlites when used with Nikon SLR cameras which have the TTL hot flash shoe. 3' long when coiled, it expands to 9', and permits easy use of flash when the camera is mounted upon a bracket.
In addition, the SC-29's AF Illuminator will also provide AF assistance to the camera in low-light conditions. This cord fully supports all advanced flash functions when used with the SB-800 or SB-900 with an applicable camera.
Some other improved features are: Posi-Lock (an improved locking switch) at both ends, and the cord on the camera shoe that now connects parallel to the camera.
The Nikon SC-29 Off Camera AF TTL Cord easily mounts to the camera's hot shoe and enables an attached SB-800 flash to accurately auto focus in low light when placed on a flash bracket. Great for beautiful shadowless lighting. The cord uses a new AF Illuminator at the mounting point that overrides the SB-800's AF Illuminator. This completely eliminates any possibility of autofocus discrepancies when using the SB-800 off camera. The SC-29 TTL cord with the SB-800 quick recycling battery pack can also be used as an off camera master controller in a multi-flash set-up.
