To a large degree I relied on bird forum -reviews and forums, to decide what to purchase, and spent many hours reading them. I agree with the assessment of other Nikon Fieldscope 82mm ED 30X owners-WOW!
If you want the best value in a scope to use along with a pair of 7X35 or 8X42 binoculars for whale, bird, wildlife, and marine watching I think this is it. Nikon 7554/7462.
On the other hand if you want an angled scope or one with a zoom eyepiece I suggest reading the forums and reviews, my conclusion was that the Nikon zoom eyepieces are not competitive right now and also that I like getting paid the several hundred dollar discount to avoid the "hunched over" effect which makes my back ache.
As far as things I like, it's a compact unit with a cleverly designed Vue-Thru case. Using a combination of flaps with Velcro and magnetic latches, the scope is ready for action in a minute or two. The large focus ring is easy to operate, and it allows focusing down to about 12ft minimum. I've found the view is indeed bright and tack sharp to the viewing edges, and no sign of color fringing. I like the Nikon eyepiece cup which rotates out, same as on my binoculars. The scope and eyepiece are made in Japan, and the case is made in China.
The only slight negatives I have found is that the case has to be partly unzipped to pull out the scope built-in sun shade. Also once removed there is no place to store the 2 lens caps, although they will fit in the small accessory bag with some effort. The lens caps are far better than those on my Nikon binoculars, they are easy to remove and do not fall off. The strap needs some padding.
I purchased it at BH, but would have liked to purchase from Amazon. The Amazon picture is wrong, it shows an angled body, also the product description is incomplete and does not describe what is included in the box. I was able to verify a Vue-Thru case is included with the Amazon product, but was unable to verify if the 25 year and the "no fault" Nikon Warranties were included as well. If you decide to purchase one I recommend reading the supplier return policy first. These are quite heavy and expensive and if you need to return a scope ask yourself how much will the return mailing and insurance cost to meet the supplier time deadline? and is there a 15% restocking fee if you opened the box?.
