I bought this for my wife, to replace an Olympus that wasn't as small or as slick as this one. I personally use DSLR's but I recognize the need for a pocket or purse camera.
I have been disappointed by the Nikon point and shoots in the past. They handle too slow, have a higher than average shutter lag, and the low light abilities are not that great. That said, this time around I went to a local store and tried out all the newer models. This one had the least start up time and shutter lag. And it was the cheapest! The lower megapixel count actually makes this a better camera compared to it's higher end brethren. There is less noise at higher ISO's as well, again compared to higher MP models. Ashton Kutcher is a genius, lol!
Easy decision. I got one for the wife. It was easy enough for her to use with minimal instruction (who reads those manuals?). My wife's happy, I'm happy. As a sidenote, I still prefer the discontinued Fuji F20, F30, F31fd models when it comes to point and shoots. That's how I roll.

the size of this camera makes it easy to carry around, it is small and thinner than your average point and shoot camera. with 8mp, i have printed out super clear and colorful 8x10 pictures. i am used to having rechargeable batteries because i can have a couple of sets always ready, but this camera uses the flat, cell phone type. i have only used it for special occasions, i have not yet put it to the test to see how long the battery life is. the menu and featues are very easy to work and understand. i have taken some videos and they are just ok, nothing to get excited about, it is just for fun, a 4 gig card will get you about 30 minutes of video only or over 800 pics on its highest resolution. a nice camera to have and play around with, i recommend it.Customer Review: CoolPix

To be honest with you I wasn't to hopeful about this $143 point and shot. But I purchase it anyway as a gift for my girlfriend, she got the ability to loose everything but the head over her shoulders, so I wasn't to exited about expending a lot of money on a camera that she will loose a couple weeks later. But after I try this little thing I realize that this is indeed a very good camera. This camera features a big screen, few buttons, good zoom, nice design, and is simple to operate. About the picture quality I can say that is not top of the line but for the money you pay is really good. This will be great for kids or forgetful people like my girl. My great joy these days is my Nikon D80 10.2MP Digital SLR Camera Kit with 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S DX VR & 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED IF AF-S DX VR Nikkor Zoom Lenses. So what do I need with a point and shoot?
The answer is I don't. If I need a quick pic of something, there is always the camera in my iPhone 3G. But I recently got a chance to set up this little Nikon for my stepson and review his work. It was very impressive. The images were clear, focused, and sharp. The camera itself is about the same size but much thinner than a pack of smokes. This makes it easy to carry around in a shirt pocket when those photo moments arise. Given the consistently excellent results, what's not to like.
Well what you get in miniaturization you give up in control. While most (and maybe all) DSLRs have electronic controls, they are loaded with manual overrides allowing the photographer to take control quickly. Going through menus whose common features are tiny icons is cumbersome. A 3X optical zoom is nice, but it offers no optical zoom for those who use them. Anti-shake technology is built in using Nikon's VR system found in its best cameras and lenses.
I installed a 4GB SD card which stores far more than the camera can hold between charges. A one GB would be more than adequate but my stepson was going to Scotland for three weeks and wouldn't be taking his laptop. I wanted him to have the capacity to take lots of pictures, and he did, but came no where close to the 4GB card's potential.
As to charging, we did have a bit of confusion about European voltage. After a bit of research on Nikon's web site I learned that voltage regulation is built into their chargers.
This is not a professional camera. But it is a good camera that has my stepson enthusiastic about photography. Since attitude is aptitude, I may be hearing about DSLs from him soon enough.
