I've been a Nikon shooter for the past 30 years and have been using their digital gear for a little over two.
If you shoot NEF (and you really should if you're serious) Capture NX2 can save you a lot of grief. I downloaded the trial version a few weeks ago after not being satisfied with the NEF conversions that I was getting from Bibble and ACR.
I didn't even wait for the trial period to expire and I ordered the software today. No, I didn't activiate the trial download as I want the actual disk. Call if my security blanket, if you will, but that's just my preference.
Not only did I order the software, I have been reading Real World Capture NX2 (highly recommended) which is a lot more understandable than the manual supplied by Nikon. I also ordered a new PC last week just so that I would be able to make the most efficient use of this software.
Yes, I think that it's that good. No more fooling around with what other software publishers "think" Nikon has in mind. Capture NX2 is designed to merge seamlessly with Nikon NEF files and it does just that. No backwards engineering and guesswork. Just the cleanest files possible from NEFs.
OK, if I love it so much, why not the fifth star? Simple. Nobody seems to be able to print from the damn thing. After I convert from the original NEF, I open Photoshop and print from there. It's a PITA and something that should have been fixed in beta.

Purchased this program along with a Nikon D90. The camera is great, the software sucks. Must have wasted a box of photo paper trying to get NX2 to print a borderless 4x6 picture. My comments refer to version 2.1.1. I find the interface clunky, confusing and ugly. It follows few Windows or Mac standards that I am aware of. It's hard to dock the various palettes without them getting in the way of the photo you're trying to edit. And it is slow when it starts up, retrieves or stores images (Windows XP). It will sometimes freeze if Zone Alarm is running one of its scans.
But my biggest gripe is it won't print borderless on my HP 7360 photo printer. No matter what I try, it leaves a border on two edges. One person suggested printing landscape pictures as portrait, then setting the auto-rotate feature. That's really awkward, and it didn't work anyway. Two emails to Nikon Tech support on this issue were never answered. This problem was in version 1 also.
There are some nice features as noted by other reviewers, but the printing issue is driving me to other software.

I got this with my new D90. I use the trail version first and found that this is too complicated. I use the auto function and compare it with Picasa from Google, Picasa generated a better result. I did not want to spend the time to understand all the functions hence I return this. It is not for the simple minded.
