Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8G ED AF-S Nikkor Wide Angle Zoom LensCustomer Review: Heavy, yes; expensive, yes; worth it, yes! Summary: 5 StarsI have been fortunate to use Leica SLR cameras and lenses for many years. Thus, my yardstick for any other lens is very high. I also own and shoot a Nikon D-200 and D-300. In particular, lens resolution, light fall off at the edges, and color saturation are very important to me. This lens is superlative in all these important respects. It is heavy, bulbous and expensive. However, I believe that the pro-sumer market is moving towards full 35mm size sensors so this lens is an investment in the future although it works extremely well on DX sensor bodies > D-40. One negative, it cannot accomodate filters, in particular, the all important circular polarizer. In my opinion, software can do remarkable things for color etc. but glare is best removed with a polarizer. If you can live with this deficiency, as I must, the lens is highly recommended.
Customer Review: You Get What You Pay For Summary: 5 StarsIf you're looking for a wide angle zoom, look no further. It's big and heavy , has a lens cap the size of your head.
Customer Review: Very sharp, wide view Summary: 4 StarsI use this lens on my D3 and love it. It is incredibly sharp. The angle is extremely wide of course, bordering on fish eye. You get a slightly similar effect on the edges but of course it's to be expected.
My only concern is that you can't use any filters on it (mainly desired for protection) since the front glass bubbles out so much but other than that, it's perfect. Check out all the praise at dpreview.
Customer Review: Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8G ED AF-S Nikkor Wide Angle Zoom Lens is SWEET PERFECTION!!!! Summary: 5 StarsWheres the Beef? Here it is! Big, Sturdy and Fast...the clarity will shock you. This study in perfection is flawless on my D3 and D300...I got ripped off by a small camera shop who charged me 1900$$ for this lens. Once I started shooting with it, my pain evaporated. I would have paid more. Nuf said.
Customer Review: Almost perfection Summary: 4 StarsThis is easily the best wide angle lens on the planet. Ultra Sharp, ultra fast, and pro quality build. Colors are wonderful with great contrast. Focus is quick and silent.
The only thing keeping this lens from getting five stars is that you have to realize its limits. Those limits, in my humble opinion, are that it tends to flair very easily. Once you realize what angles are usable to shoot during the day, then you can eliminate most of the flair issue. It would help if the lens were able to accept filters, but it doesn't so you will have to live with the flair issues. Also, the build quality isn't what you will be use to if you've handle the previous generations of the PRO grade Nikon glass. It does not have the heavy solid feel one might expect. The crinkle finish is also missing. The rings also doesn't feel very well damped. Its still very well built, make no mistake, just not what you'd expect if you have experience with the 70-200 f/2.8 VR or the "Beast" 28-70 f/2.8
These are the few gripes I have about this lens. Image quality wise, there isn't anything to complain about. It's about as close to perfection as we will see for a while when it comes to Wide Angle Lenses.
